March!

Alright, so here we go with March and things are looking brighter than ever as this year rolls onward with awesome music and events.  First we gotta mention our new DJ of the month Dr. Lo! Be sure to read through the interview and get some insight into this amazing DJ.  At the beginning of every month as usual we look forward to another edition of La Parada rocking out El Paso in a most proper manner! This time DJ Drez  from ATU, Living Legends – is heading through to bless some sick hip hop on the spot with Ray Dub and residents System Addict and Rob Bass backing up the rest of the tunes. Click here for more info!

That same night Dfault Gallery presents Exquisite Dorks from 7-11pm with some fresh new pencil drawings from dope local talent.  This is not too far from La Parada so it’s gonna be great for meeting up before the party. More info here

We always want to remind everyone about the awesomeness that is Darkroom Saturdays! They always bring it fresh with a great vibe and excellent selectaz! Big ups these guys and make sure to head out to enjoy the sounds of DJ Rich, Noevol, Greg Marquez, Izzy and Dar-C! Choice! More info here

Here comes AMP and H.A.U.S. again to bring more exciting talent for this month! Den Ishu from Desolat records in Germany is a hot producer right now and he is expected to bring the heat! Aler and Paolet as well as Spy and Che are warming up the night. For more info click here !  Make sure not to miss Thee-O this week at Mbar for some seriously sick sounds – link on the last post…

Ok one more this week, and it’s a great one – Anthony Pappa is heading down March 26th and the location is yet to be determined.  We love the sets he drops ever since the first Nubreed CDs with him and of course he has only got better. Stay tuned for more details on this one and check here

So that about wraps it up for today, more will be up this week as we get the fliers in so stay tuned and send us any feedback!!! More stuff on the way in April including Sean Price from Heltah Skeltah as well as Alexi Delano!  Thanks again!

Next!

Hello again! Thanks for heading back! So next we have February’s lineup and things are looking great! First off we need to mention that Robert Babicz has been postponed until May unfortunately, but Pastilla Digital tells us there will definitely be a reschedule.  La Parada is this week with a potent lineup featuring Zechs Marquise jamming live and Zeque Peña, JayTee, Rob Bass & System A on the decks. More info here. Don’t forget to scope out our new DJ of the month Rob Bass for a new mix and interview!

Soho lounge has things picking up with Dirty Fridays and this week looks hot with the Dustcity favs Octavio and Zeke Noevol rocking the spot.  Residents Vinn-e and Deftech will be rounding out the lineup and we have to say we really enjoy the vibe at Soho, and the deals are looking perfect for getting a break from that rough week.  More info here

This week Darkroom Saturdays is keeping it fresh with a dope diverse lineup! We hear the vibe is chill, the sounds are killer top-notch and this week the DJs are playing some house and breaks.  Its only $5 and you can bring your own drinks so this is an excellent option for some Saturday night dancing. More info here

Need a fix for a big ass show? Well here is one for ya’…Above and Beyond are seriously sick at dropping dope sets wherever they go and I am pretty sure this will be no different, this time on the 18th at the Sunshine in Albuquerque. Now I am not a huge trance fan or anything, but this act is definitely one to catch. SMG has been doing it huge in New Mexico and this year looks great from the group. More info here

Speaking of Albuquerque the annual hip hop show Breakin Hearts is back again and it has always been an amazing show.  With B-boy battles, workshops, art and live music this one is truly underground – dont sleep! More info here

Dont forget about Worthy coming up this month on the 19th, as well as Dustin Zahn, Sharam, M.A.N.D.Y. and more!  Check back next week for those shows and more!

Bass Fiends

Hey! Sorry about the delay, we have been hella busy here – but don’t fret ‘cuz we got all the news you have been looking for! First off we had an amazing weekend with the people at Electric Soul and at Manik.  The art was incredible at Electric Soul with stuff from Miguel Ibarra, Rasquatch and Zeque Pena to name a couple and the music was on point at both spots! We want to give big props to Maintain and Listen:React for always bringing the best in quality events for the underground, big big thanks and love guys! Here is a few more shots and a couple vids:

Art by Migs

Next up we are excited to see a new Bass night in El Paso open up at commonwealth, starting tomorrow! This one is going down every third Thursday and with Rob Bass, System and DLS bringing it proper this night is a must go to! Expect a ton of great tunes and make sure to make it out to ensure lots more lo blows from these bass champs! More info here

February is turning out to look like an AMAZING month with a ton of top talent coming through, and first we are super excited to see Robert Babicz coming on Feb 12th to El Paso! This is one hell of a headliner with his studio mastery knocking it out of the park anytime he releases a track! If you think you are a good producer, just try to remix one of his tracks and post it on soundcloud – and he will give feedback EXACTLY how he feels.  He made a name for himself as Rob Acid – making banging tech and acid tracks for quite a while and now he is regarded as a true studio master.  Take some time out to make it to this show, we guarantee an incredible night! Special thanks to Pastilla for bringing out the big guns this year - click here.

Next we have AMP bringing another big name – Worthy, fromthe DirtyBird Label.  Worthy is a super in-demand name in the house circuit right now, alongside major players like Claude Von Stroke and J Phlip.  With a string of solid releases on quite a few prominent labels such as Curfew, Om and Utensil as well as his own label Katabatic Records – worthy is destroying dancefloors worldwide with that bangin’ bass sound. Opening they have Aler & Payolet as well as Spy & Che. Make sure to make it out! More info here

One last one real quick that we heard about is legendary lyricist Black Thought coming through El Paso on Jan 29th.  The info is kinda slim but it will be at Wet Ultra Lounge and the fliers are already out but no fb page for the event.  Really though, what else do you need to know? It’s Black Thought! As if being in the seminal hip hop group The Root wasn’t enough – this major inspiration from Philly has worked with just about all of the best producers in the world and his next level conscious rhymes  are always elevating the game.  Tickets at ticketbully and more info here

So there is still a grip of shows to be excited about and quite a few still to be announced so make sure to head back and see what we got! Thanks again always for supporting the underground and making things happen! Love! See you next time!

Keep It Movin’

So Tanner Ross was pretty amazing from what we caught, and the dude was an all around great guy, big props to AMP once again for bringing the real.  We only got a few shots that night but click on a image to get the full res, the club was vibing really well and unfortunately we had to call it a night early because that nasty bug that’s been going around caught up with someone.

La Parada First Fridays was apparantly amazing again although we didn’t make it for this one :/ .  We found a couple videos you can check out here! Definitely some serious talent and awesome people going through there so we are making sure not to miss it again!

Eli Escobar is coming in from New York to drop a set on the 13th this week at The Garden. His track selections never fails to impress and he has the chops to prove lasting determination in music.  They have Cobos from Pastilla opening for Eli as well as Jen and Slowhands putting down tunes that night.  Sounds like fun! Check out more here

We want to also shout out local heavy hitters from Dust City Music doing a dope night for AMP at Mbar tomorrow night, Jan 12th! With the tracks these guys produce and style they bring this is a must see event for fans of great tech sounds.  They got Borderline Skitzo, Octavio, Dabsound and Dan E bringing it down steady with Spy and Che opening up the night. More info here

Don’t forget about the new Saturday night spot Darkroom Satudays @ 1475George Dieter.  We heard the spot was poppin’ last week with great vibes and awesome people.  It is BYOB so you can save a few bucks while having a good time with your friends! We really want to catch this and come back with some photos. This week they have badman DLS ripping it up with Parasight, Just Mike and old favorite Darkstarr. Check it out here!

Ok that wraps it up for this week, there is a TON more coming for February and alot we are excited about so check back with us next week! Also don’t forget to check out Manik and Electric Soul this week! Thanks for everything people, keep the scene alive!!! Much love!

Happy New Year!

Well 2011 is here and we couldn’t be happier! 2010 finished on a great note for us and we hope the same for you.  We are proud to present Mittens as our first featured DJ for the year – and he blessed us with a brand new mix for the occasion so make sure to click on the 2550 DJs link to have a listen and find out more.

The amount of shows already arriving is amazing! Here we are excited to see the return of Electric Soul Jan 14th to El Paso with Maintain’s own house heads Eddie Chalace and Raydub playing alongside System Addict and One Man Jazz. The artist lineup is super impressive with Exist1981 and Miguel Ibarra and quite a few others.  This one has always been a crowd pleaser for awesome sounds and art. More info here.

The same evening we are stoked to see Manik playing at the first Listen:React party this year.  They are doing it proper at the Camino Real Hotel in the Dome Bar- with a super nice dance floor lit from beneath and some dope sound.  Borderline Skitzo and Ed Chalace are playing this one as well so make sure to get there and get down! Click here!

Don’t forget about First Fridays @ La Parada, either.  On the 7th they are welcoming 2011 with Bulletproof Tiger showing up as well as One Man Jazz, Chef  and Kidmonk along with usual suspects System A. and Rob Bass.  Scope it here

Darkroom Saturdays starts off January 8th with One Man Jazz (this guy is blowin’ UP) Rob Bass, Miss Yvonne and Sol – B.  This new spot looks extremely promising with a variety of styles represented and a unique atmosphere to chill out and soak up some tunes.  For more info click here

Just a quick reminder to also check out the Tanner Ross show on Jan 8th brought to us by AMP.  We shouted this one out in a previous post so head there for the links.  AMP is also bringing a ton of new talent in 2011 including Worthy from Dirtybird and Thee-O from Perfecto – check back for updates on those further into January.

Sound Evolution is starting back up in 2011 with Touch My Button .  This is a live PA event with some big names from the north.  Expect some serious sounds from these 2 teams bringing it proper with their own productions and remixes.  This one is going down Jan 22nd.

Finally here are some videos and a couple shots from the amazing Carlo Lio show at MBar. The vibe was great, the people were beautiful and overall it was an amazing time – huge props to everyone involved in this, it was my FAVORITE set from 2010!

Alright well that wraps up our New Years shows – there is a ton more going on, especially further into the month so make sure to head back here and join us! Thanks for all your support – have a blessed and prosperous 2011!!!

PEACE

Xmas wish list

As we get into the holiday spirit we figured it would be a great time to list some awesome gear from this year that some of you might be interested in! We also have a quick wrap up of the last few shows that have happened and a look at the last few for this year as we move into 2011.

Marc Houle and Magda were both amazing this last weekend at Club 101. The turnout was great, the sound was solid and everyone had an amazing night.  Both these techno stars really brought out the big guns, bangin’ out techno with a huge selection of earth shattering beats.  J. Bowra opened up the night with nice heavy set that left everyone hungry for more serious techno until Marc Houle started up. Check out more pics and videos:

We heard that Style of Eye was an amazing show, but unfortunately we didn’t make it, so hopefully there is a next time.  That is some great news for El Paso which means that there is another solid production team in town!

Amp is still bringing some shows on the December radar including this one Dec. 22nd with John Pridgen and Alain Baylon.  John has some great tunes out on some dope labels including Sun City Hustlers and Tango and Alain joins him from San Antonio to bring out the serious tech house sounds.  Click here.  Don’t forget that next week is CARLO LIO – for Amp’s one year, this is a must see event so make sure not to miss, Dec 18 Click here!!! Also the night before is Listen:React’s one year with JPLS from the Minus label click here for more info on that one.

LNSC is bringing out the brilliant Talib Kweli, but this time he’ll be bringing the DJ set with his legendary flow in El Paso.  This one is going down Dec. 30th at the Garden with One Man Jazz and Alfredo Campos opening for Talib.  This is a very rare appearance to catch Talib spinning so try not to miss! More here.

We have to shout out this show in Albuquerque on Tuesday with the incredible Emalkay dropping through to blow up the spot. This dubstep warrior is all the way from the UK and his crew Dub Police are some of the freshest and most forward thinking minds in that scene. Black Ops has been the go to show for breaks and heavy Dubstep and with headliners like they have coming through lately it looks like Black Ops will only be getting bigger! Big Ups guys! Click here for more info.

Now onto some killer gear! First up is the Pioneer CDJ 2000.  This beast has been the topic of many DJs lately with several clubs upping the setup with these in the booth.  With Pioneer’s unrivaled design housing not only a CD/Media player but also an interface that works directly with Serato without a box.  With a host of other features like looping and multiple cue points; you may justify the price tag with epic use. Include a sweet case like the Marathon model pictured here and you have one beautiful piece of gear.

The Denon DN-X1600 is one hell of a good mixer.  Based on the design of the insane X1700 model – this mixer features a more affordable, and stylish alternative.  Loaded with features including Midi that runs audio and video along with superior audio quality and maximum compatibility with software interfaces this is one mixer for the serious DJ.

If an all in one controller sounds more like your thing how about this new Traktor Kontrol S4? This looks like one mean machine with an impressive design and excellent reviews so far.  The layout is compact, yet not crammed and the accessibility of the features with Traktor pro is incredible.  Native Instruments have really stepped up the game with their latest software and controllers. Also check out their new Maschine unit: a production, live, and DJ sampling device that is making waves with it’s amazing versatility.

Propellerheads Reason 5 was released recently and it is easy to see why this is one of the best and most popular music production solutions out there. The quality and ease of use has brought a ton of new producers out into the world over the years and this entry brings some interesting new ideas.  First is the new Kong drum machine / sampler which borrows from the famous pads of the MPC.  Kong also features new drum synth technology allowing analogue style shaping of the drum tones through modules that enhance and add parameters. Also is the new Octo-Rex which basically beefs up the Dr. Rex into a multi-loop unit holding 8 loops at time. Inlcude their new Record software and you have yourself a slew of options to get your creative sounds out.

Sure it’s a bit trendy to put these on the list, but damn those are some stylish headphones! The V-Moda Crossfade LP.  I recommend picking them up before everyone else does… (kidding) but with a variety of looks to choose from and excellent response dynamics these are some all around impressive headphones.

Alright, that about wraps it up for us this time! Thanks again for checking in and we hope you all stay safe and warm out there! PEACE

Top 10 of Summer 2010 wrap up!

Ok, so we are a bit behind – and we really appreciate all the feedback we have received recently so here’s hoping the rest of the year is just as awesome! For this entry (before it gets too late and everyone forgets…) we look at this year’s past events of the summer and try to narrow it down to the top 10 best, that we heard about or had the privilege of attending. Alright lets get to it!

10. BURNING MAN – Even though reports say that every year it is filled with more trashy people and reasons to avoid the dust filled desert, we still remain in awe of the pics and stories from each years excursion into this life changing experience.  The key is to come prepared – for using your own supplies and equipment, pack accordingly and try to stay with good natured, like minded people.  The lineup was epic with a vast multitude of talent scattered across the playa. Mostly we just want to share what the revelers call, ‘home’.

9. L. E. D. FESTIVAL – The London Electronic Dance Festival boasted some top class talent and rare appearances from the likes of Aphex Twin and Leftfield. With a healthy dose of heavyweights including Subfocus, Shy FX, Soulwax and Goldfrapp to name a few. There are several reasons EDM is so big in Europe and one must be the sheer amount of talent and  support in the area which makes us very very jealous.

8. MAD DECENT BLOCK PARTY – Not only one of the most rocking shows, but also one of the most unique – with a super diverse lineup headed by Diplo himself and you get in for free! Talent includes Nosaj Thing, Dj Sega, Maluca and Gaslamp Killer to name a few. This show made four legendary stops that will have you watching videos of it all year salivating for next years block party.

7. ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL – We had to include this one simply for the amount of record breaking news it held, and it will probably be the last of it’s kind.  The estimate on the head count lies around 185,000 party goers, up from 130,000 from the previous year.  With every big name touring DJ on the lineup this was a must see, and continues to dominate on forums for ravers top picks.

6. WE LOVE SPACE / COME TOGETHER – So on Ibiza, there is a TON of excellent parties and legendary nights owning up to  the best of excess. Our favorite this year was We Love Space, especially the closing party in Sep.  Mixcloud has a podcast of Paul Rich playing that is absolutely essential big room listening.  Check it out here. Big contenders were Amnesia, and Cocoon, extremely hard to choose between!

5. SONNEMONDSTERNE – A who’s who line up off the top EDM lists in the world headed out to this one.  Held out in the calm German country side, this event is like paradise for fans of DJ sets and live PA from the best in the game.  This years had the likes of Jesse Rose, Moguai, Plastikman, Underworld, Sven Vath, Moderat and the list goes on and on and on.

4. COACHELLA – Coachella is one of those events that is easy to trash on, and say each previous one was better, but year after year the buzz is always well warranted and this year was no different.  Bringing Faith No More together on stage alone is worth heavy duty hype but the list goes on and on; from Orbital, to Gary Numan, Hot Chip, Major Lazer – it was one bad ass party.

3. SW4 – Southwest 4  has got all my favorite flavors: big tech house masters, hip hop funk, dubstep and techno (sure electro house too but, not really my cup of tea lol :p) An entire Bedrock tent year after year makes this one a spot where you can catch some of the best tunes around, that cant be found anywhere else!  This event has the big bad beasts of EDM reunite in what can only be described as near perfection.

2.ROCK THE BELLS – We have to show huge love and support for what Rock the Bells has done. Since 2004 this has been the most historic and fulfilling hip hop festival in the world.  The list of incredible reunions and performances have made this one a hip hop show to transcend the boundaries into new ways of understanding the culture. This years show boasted performances from KRS, Wu-Tang and Lauren Hill-  historic hip hop legends.

1.  DETROIT ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL/ MOVEMENT – 10 years strong and no signs of stopping.  This is the heart of American techno. Here is Derrick Carter rocking out to the devotees that attended this years amazing spectacle.  While not the largest in size, this is one of the most important festivals to underground music culture.  While it has changed names and gone through various degrees of corporate sponsorship and sell out moments,  it remains true to the artists that play the festival and is a reflection of our country as well. While not as mainstream or popular as it is in the rest of the world – EDM has a special place here.

Thanks so much for checking out or list! Hope you enjoyed it, and please leave comments on your favorite parties this summer! We’ll be posting again soon with lots more fall shows to keep you warm as winter approaches! Stay Underground!!!

Random pt. 2

So the summer spell is starting to wind down a little, but the news just keeps rolling in of all the big events still wrapping up this year’s outdoor festivities. Burning Man 2010 is absolutely huge, kicking off today with performances ranging from Will Bailey, Scumfrog, Dj Dan, Aphrodite, LA Riots, Donald Glaude to Nigel Richards, Paul Kalbrenner, Freq Nasty, Justin and Christian Martin, Ill Gates, Seth Troxler and even tech house monster – Behrouz.  WOW, what a line up, we hope that everyone has fun and is super safe out there this years, sounds awesome!!

Porcupine Tree was AMAZING at Club 101 recently! Unfortunately we did not acquire any footage and cannot find any at the moment… but we can assure that the performance was top-notch and the sound quality was far better than whom they were opening for; Coheed and Cambria. So props to their sound guy and to the band, really worth checking out.

We are hyped to see techno legend  Adam Beyer on Sep. 10th @ 101 – his mixes and production prove to be quite impressive.  SMG has some other big talent lined up: Sander Kleinenberg and Sander Van Doorn are both coming to El Paso with old Oakenfold as well, coming to both Texas and New Mexico from what we hear.

The new album from dubstep hero Skream,  Outside The Box is an incredible, deep concept album from an uprising artist with true focus on making changes in the artform.  Perhaps suprising a few with the amospheric lush textures opposed to grinding basslines, Skream is seen favoring true sub range bliss with the sly producion.  It evokes a very true emotion when taking in the intricate pieces put forth, really a push forward for the genre as a whole, Skream proves where power lies.

That’s it for now, keep up to date with us, we will feature some new pics from festivals and we have our TOP TEN summer flashbacks from this year recapping all the crazyness that went down. Thanks again and keep those tunes BUMPIN’!

Defining Graffiti

Exhaust

How many times have you ever wanted to leave your mark? Leave an impression – make a statement, prove that you existed? Have you ever wanted to just give up on the constraints of society and pursue a life of solitude, writing in anonymity to free your mind and soul while defining a moment? Well, I certainly have – and today I would like to share some of my love for one of the most raw, uncut and pure forms of expression out there; graffiti art.

rapes

Graffiti has come a long way since before the 70′s when it started to precipitate cultural momentum.  It has come full circle, almost to the realm of pop art, where objects embody material kitsch in their presentation or imitation of street art. Legal productions are the norm, and big name graff artists are making bucks and gaining serious recognition in major gallery spaces world wide.

totem

Today I wanted to give a few examples of artists I really regard as keeping the form alive, and some favorites I have always admired.  Graffiti is the cement that binds the elements of hip hop together, emulating the curves and angles sharply performed by a B- Boy or the swagger and design of an Emcee’s metaphors.  It is essential to understanding the the urban nature of hip hop, growing from the plight of the individual against the media storm of advertisements.  It is a struggle, a balance between the Id and the Ego, a definition of the moment.

Ges

Graffiti is relative to us all, giving insight into the passions that motivate an individual. The will to construct a timeline of essence, an edifice of being.  The true nature of graffiti is revolution, discontent and rebellion – it must always remain simultaneously revered and detested, it must always remain the subject of controversy and punishment.  There are risks that must be taken.

Our good friend Path One has been tearing it up lately, most notably at the Mile High Fest in CO, here’s a pic of my boy with Slug, of Atmosphere fame.

and heres a few more from his rampage:

Plus here is some of his associates -

Thanks for checking back with us, we have some exciting updates!  Matthew Dear was incredible! Unfortunately no pics were taken, D’oh! The crowd was a little thin, but he seriously killed. Tonight is Porcupine Tree in El Paso, so expect some footage from this one. We got TRiST getting a slot in monday nights @ Azul in the Hotel Encanto in Las Cruces – spinning some underground hip hop with DJs; DZ1 , Grand, Pervee and more!

Check back soon for more updates – PEACE
